Kimin 2 x 25MVA 120 / 11kV AIS substation, Democratic republic of Congo

Kisanfu Mining SAS also known as KIMIN, is a captive mine, located about 225km from Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo. In line with the expansion plans for the site we were asked to design a new 120/11kV substation with 2 x 25MVA 120kV transformer bay, 1 x 120kV Incomer Bay and a new control building housing 11kV switchgear.

Through our sister company we delivered the initial earth work design and overall Electrical, Civil and Structural engineering of outdoor 120kV switchyard and control room including 11 KV indoor distribution switchgear panels..

The main challenge in this project was the location of the substation. The substation was located in an area that had a high proportion of rainfall and was prone to flooding every year. Due to this high level of soil erosion was observed in the area in and around the proposed substation compound. Also, the substation was located in the natural storm water path of surrounding area and this resulted in significant design issues mainly around the civil elements. Using our years of substation design experience we provided a unique design for strengthening the equipment foundations by using sand and rubber. We also designed a retaining wall to stop storm water from entering the substation compound. Lastly a unique design for drainage was provided which removed any possibility of flooding the substation compound.

The substation was successfully designed, constructed and commissioned in line with the project programme and within the planned budget.
