Sustainability in our Designs

As Engineering consultants involved in development of major global infrastructure projects, we understand and appreciate the key role that can be played by us towards achieving the United Nations Sustainable development goals. Hence SynchPower Consultants have made environmental management an essential element within its overall business plan and are committed to not only comply with our legal duties and with other requirements to which we subscribe but to exceed these requirements where reasonably practicable.

We seek to manage our use of energy, reducing consumption and continuously improving efficiency wherever possible.

To support this we have identified the following areas of governance and included relevant processes to reduce the carbon footprint in our Quality systems / delivery processes:

  1. We identify all processes that generate waste and seek to avoid environmentally harmful disposal by eliminating, minimising or reusing waste products wherever reasonably practicable or, where this cannot be achieved, identifying and taking advantage of opportunities for recycling.
  2. As SynchPower Consultants are involved in design of high voltage substations and other electrical projects we identify the main areas in our design that can help in reducing the carbon footprint of the project. Some of the main areas that we focus on during producing design are as follows:
    1. Rationalise our electrical layout so as to minimise the platform size required for the substation.
    2. Rationalise our Civil and structural design to reduce the carbon footprint of foundations and structural elements ensuring optimal usage.
    3. Review our conductor calculations so as not to overestimate the loads passed on to structure and foundations.
    4. Propose use of SF6 free switchgear where technically feasible
    5. Propose reuse of concrete assets if technically feasible.
    6. Support implementation of IEC 61850 digital process bus solution.
    7. Specify environmentally friendly products (e.g. LEDs) in our Building service design.
    8. All design review meetings with external clients will be over Teams in first instance. Where this is not possible, or where the client insists otherwise, we will try and minimise our carbon footprints resulting from the travel to attend the review meetings. (i.e car share or public transport)

We are working towards implementation of an integrated Environmental Management system in line with ISO 14001:2015 and schedule necessary Environmental and Sustainability school training to our staff.
